How to Do Christmas (From The Guys Who Did it First)

I have discovered the goal of Christmas!

It's in Luke 2:20!

"The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told."

The aim of Christmas is to go home happy!

During the Christmas season, everyone wants you to do something.

Come to our pageant! Hurry in for the best sales!  Don't miss this event!  Buy now!

This usually leaves us tired, frazzled and broke!  Or worse...in deep debt!

How is that a good thing?

From the story of the nativity in the bible, we see a very different celebration of the birth of Jesus.

The shepherds got word of the blessed event from a spectacular angelic host and went to see.

They observed the baby, and then the scripture goes on to say;

17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.

They started to tell everyone about what they had seen!  The Savior

The story wraps up with the shepherds heading back to their jobs, but now it was DIFFERENT!

They were glorifying and praising God for all they had seen!

THAT'S the goal of Christmas, to walk away happy and amazed at what God has done!

Do you limp out of the Christmas season, exhausted?

Try doing what the shepherds did...come, see, rejoice...and go home happy!

Life on the Edges.

We like life in neat little boxes.

We want a clear definition between right and wrong, good and evil, for and against.

That perfect world does not exist.

For example...

I have been watching a bit of football lately.  It's cool when the quarterback makes a pass and the receiver is wide open and it's a clear touchdown.  That's nice.  The officials have no problem calling that play.

But what happens a lot is that catches are made on the edges of the goal line and it's not always clear if it's a touchdown or not.  The officials have to go to the video review and have a discussion with a number of other people as to exactly what happened.

This was the case in September of 2012...

The Green Bay Packers lost to the Seattle Seahawks, 14–12, in controversial fashion.

On the final play of the game, Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson threw a Hail Mary pass into the end zone intended for wide receiver Golden Tate. Both Tate and Packers defender M. D. Jennings got their hands on the ball while both players were still in the air and attempting to gain possession.
The two officials near the play initially gave separate signals of touchdown and touchback, before ruling the players had simultaneous possession, resulting in a Seahawks game-winning touchdown. (Wikipedia summary)

The officials on the field disagree on what happened.
This is SO MUCH like life...

It would be so convenient to be able to make clear rulings on situations that fall into those "gray" areas.

Different perspectives, alternate views and contrasting life experience all come into play, and the final decision is anything but definitive.

In the news we hear of religious groups who say they have a lock on what's "right and wrong" and do not take kindly to anyone who opposes what they have to say.  There is no room for discussion, no laying out of the facts and circumstances and no compassion.

It's our way or the highway.

Not to say we should not hold some individual beliefs.  That's very important.  But if you feel at all threatened by hearing what someone else believes, then what you hold to may not very well grounded or you just may have a difficult time expressing it.

Like it or not, different opinions and controversial views are here to stay.

Here are some bible passages that go along with this topic:  Acts 15 - The Council at Jerusalem, Luke 2:41-52 - Jesus asking questions in the temple.

Myths and Mrs.

What a cool weekend.

My wife got me tickets for the Mythbusters, Behind the Myths show at the Sony Centre in Toronto on Saturday, so we made a weekend out of the event.

We did some Christmas shopping at Vaughn Mills and then caught the show.

Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman of the Mythbusters!

We relaxed at the hotel that night then off to IKEA to drool over all the great furniture!
Rosr dropped some big hints about wanting this island!

We capped off the weekend with another outstanding concert with Ken Whiteley and his amazingly talented friends at Hugh's Room on Dundas.

The music is always outstanding and the food is delicious!

Rose was moved to tears a few times during the evening by the singers, Sharon Riley, Michelle Willis, and Mati Haskell

Could this be an event that could fly in Barrie?

Celebrity: Now and Then

There has been something rolling around in my brain for a week and I can't yet put the pieces together, so maybe you can help me.

Do we treat God like...a celebrity?

When we have an encounter with Him, is it something we brag about, like meeting, say, Brad Pitt or Johnny Depp?

Do we go on and on about our "conversation", when it was just a few quick words?

It can become all about US.

Meeting face to face with a celeb can make most people a little giddy for sure, I have been there.

But we are talking about GOD!

We are told by Paul that we should "Pray without ceasing"!  A constant stream of communication.

Just something I am wondering about!

Speaking With Intention...Excellent Notion!

Confession time.

Occasionally I will watch Jane Austen movies with my wife.

She has her favorites and we own them on DVD.

When the mood strikes, they come out and we enjoy them together.

Here is what I love about them.

The way they talk!

The characters express themselves with such perfect clarity!  I want to be like that!

It seems that communication these days has become a bit muddled.

When I watch these movies, I am inspired to speak with directness and intention.

Some of the phrases and expressions get burned into my mind and I wish I could use them in everyday conversation!

Bring back Victorian speech!

Fare thee well and good morrow!

Stand Up for God!

Me and Tim Maassarany having our usual fun on the All New Breakfast Club!

In my opinion, I have the best job in the world.

It's also the strangest.

My business card says Todd Gale "Morning Show Personality".

My employment is me.

My qualifications, aside from some technical know-how, are just being who I am.

What?

Let's examine this for a moment.

As a morning show co-host, I help start YOUR day with some great music, information and some fun thrown in!

As a naturally introverted geeky type, I have had my challenges doing this odd but wonderfully satisfying job!

So, since my skills basically revolve around connecting with a large audience on a daily basis, how do I constantly improve those skills?

The basics come to mind.

Respect those who tune in, pray for them.

Understand that every person has value, even if they don't believe they do.

Build them up and make them smile!

Ok, now, what about more growth?

Every day we open the mic and, it's just me and Tim Maassarany in the control room.

We don't SEE you all. So this led to the following chain of events...

I had it in my mind about a year ago that I would like to try my hand at Stand Up Comedy.

Why?  Good question, so glad you asked!

First off, I am a goof and love to be funny.

But, the funny for me is usually spontaneous, in the moment, reactionary and only among a small group of two or three people.

Stand Up seemed to me the best way to learn how to relate to a larger audience of "real" people.

It's a chance to be in the moment, with actual PREPARED things to say, and to see the reactions of people in real time.

It's an opportunity to see what's really funny and what is just funny to me.

So, God set this whole thing up.  Who do I meet here in Barrie?  A comedian!

Someone said, "You should meet Wil Twynstra."  I said "What kind of name is that?"

Anyway, we got together and I related to him my desire to do stand up as an exercise in growth.

This got the ball rolling and before I knew what was going on, we DID IT!

My mom drove 3.5 hours to be in the audience!  She snapped this pic of me making some kind of point!

I actually went onstage and did it!  What a rush!

Stand Up For God 5 was a ton of fun and one of the most scary things I've ever done.

Family and friends were there to cheer me on and I think it went pretty well!

We raised a good chunk of money for Arise Christian Academy to boot!

I am still dissecting all that I learned from the experience, but one thing is for sure...

I want to do it again!

What a great night!

Bacon Blues

I was preparing breakfast for my wife the other day and realized we had no bacon!

That’s a horrible discovery!
When you think you had bacon only to open he fridge and the hallowed bacon drawer is empty!
We called the grocery store….”Has it happened to you TO?”  “NO?  You have a whole aisle of bacon?  Oh thank goodness!
We have a bacon emergency!  I am sending my husband!”
They say “We’ll clear the aisle ma’am!”
I pull up in front of the grocery store, the have a guy open the door and they usher me in and we run down the aisles shouting “get out of the way”!  Move people!
I get there and, I can’t decide!  I go into bacon brain lock!
There are too many varieties!
What do I want?
Maple flavoured, low sodium, Apple wood-smoked, hickory, peppercorn crusted, back, pea meal, turkey, chicken?
HELP ME!
I make a snap decision and go with a thick cut Hickory, because I am really hungry by this time.
I get home and the pan is ready.
Bacon shrinks so I load the pan as much as possible. It’s all hanging over the sides.
The sizzle is tantalizing!
I go into a bacon trance.
Watching the pop of the fat, gazing as the meat turns translucent and begins to curl up.
I snap out of it!  It’s time for the flip!
Gingerly I use the tongs to grasp two or three slices at a time and turn them over.
Now the sizzling is taken to a whole new level!  Watch out, the grease is flying everywhere!
I don’t care!  It’s almost done!
I have to focus now because you have to hit that exact moment before the bacon becomes too crispy, and just after it’s fully cooked.
It’s the mystical bacon perfection zone!
I get a plate ready with exactly two paper towels neatly folded.  This will absorb the last of the precious grease.
Here we go three, two, and one…NOW!  It's over to the plate and there it sits.
The aroma is intoxicating.
Only then do I realize, I haven’t cooked anything else!
Now the wonderful bacon must sit and wait until the eggs are scrambled and the toast is toasted and the coffee is perked!
How could I have been so utterly foolish?
Ok, let’s just get it done.  I scramble eggs, all the while the bacon is looking at me.
I’ll just have one.  It’s an appetizer I say!
I sneak one and my mouth goes into a flavor happy dance!
My tongue is twerking with delight!  So good!
“Watch the eggs, don’t burn the toast!” I hear my wife say.
This is taking too long, so I grab another slice…I am weak.  Now what?
When breakfast is served, there needs to be a proper amount of bacon on the dish to be acceptable!
I know!
I put the eggs and toast on the plate and then I cut the remaining bacon strips in HALF!
Genius!
Now it looks like double bacon!  Breakfast is saved!  We sit down to eat.
We have no more ketchup…

What is confidence?

Who does this guy think he is?

He's Gene Simmons, that's who!

Gene Simmons said this in an interview...

"People often confuse, at least in my estimation, my pride and self-confidence with arrogance. Because they are not used to people who have an in-your-face, 'take it or leave it/this is how I am' point of view. I'm more like an animal in the jungle that (urinates) on the ground and doesn't ask your permission. 'This is me, this is my territory.' It's simply defining who I am and what I stand for."
"That's called full disclosure, before the facts. Others simply hold their opinions to themselves and never say who they are. You will always know who I am. You don’t have to like it; that's OK if you don't."

I need help with something...

What exactly is confidence?

I hear about being humble as a Christian.  Humility is something characteristic of a good person in general.

But what is it?
Is confidence a good thing when it comes to being a Christian or is it the thin edge of pride?
I need a certain degree of confidence in my everyday life just to get through the day.
I can hear the response to this in my head, "It's being confident in God, and knowing who you are in HIM that gives us true boldness."
I understand that, but sometimes that can come off as pride to.

1 Peter 5:5New International Version (NIV)

In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because,
“God opposes the proud
but shows favor to the humble.”

I admire those who are confident, but I find it hard to be so myself at times.

Any thoughts?

Jedi Wisdom

Yoda was a cute character when he was introduced in "The Empire Strikes Back"  in 1980. (One of my favorite movies of all time).  He was full of laughter and mischief, and then Luke Skywalker realized who he really was, a wise Jedi Master!  Then his personality changed.  Yoda became the strict teacher, the disciplinarian and the one who made you think hard about your life.  At one point, Luke thinks he can handle what's coming and says "I'm not afraid"!  Yoda responds with surprise and says...

At that moment we understand that Luke is in for the ride of his life!

My life is like that lately.

There are thing that I want to do.  I am eager to do them, but that lurking enemy, FEAR holds us back!

Facing fear is no fun at all.  Telling stories afterwards is fun.  Looking back on the memories is fun.  Stepping out to the things you are afraid of is nothing short of terrifying!

Thank God for the wonderful people who speak words of strength to us!  Thank God for those who see reality and can give us a non-glossed-over statement of the truth.  Thank God for the Yoda's in our lives who can steer our enthusiasm and make sure we land on our feet!

My next fear-defeating exercise is stand-up comedy. I am up for about 5 minutes.  On radio we get a minute and a half to tell a story and be entertaining and interesting.  But, FIVE WHOLE MINUTES?  Whoa!  The internal struggle is very real!

It could be anything that generates fear, but the more you talk about it and reach out to those who have the wisdom of Yoda, the fear subsides a bit.

Maybe your going for a job interview, giving a presentation or leaving on a missionary journey, it does not matter.  Fear can stop us from moving ahead in big and small things.  Face it head on and grab on to those who will hold you up in prayer.

1John 4:18 There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.

May the Force be with you!

Life is a Roller Coaster Sometimes!

Over the last weekend, my wife and I got to spend time with our firstborn!  There were several things we could of done with a wide open schedule and a whole weekend, but the one thing that got him and his girl friend, Jess really pumped was...Wonderland!

It was not something we expected to do that Saturday, but we were up for it!

Last time I was at Wonderland, I missed out on the BIG coasters and was wondering if I would get them in before fall.

The Behemoth and Leviathan were both pretty fun, but the real fun was just being able to hang out with "the boy" and his girl!

Sunday was going to be a church day but it turned into a day of shopping around Barrie in order to maximize daylight hours.  They had to drive that night back to New Liskaerd!  We DID have some enjoyable "God" conversations anyway, despite missing service!

After an epic journey through the malls, we headed to the Arboretum for a walk through what I call the "tree zoo"!  The fall colors are just starting to emerge and it was a special way to end off our short visit!

Now that we are temporary "empty-nesters", we realize how special the kids are and how our relationships with them grow and change.

When you are a parent of young ones, there are ups and downs, once you get through those, it's a fun/different stage.

They can't stay "kids" forever but they are always family!

ABSOLUTELY THE BEST, MOST AMAZING, ENTERTAINING AND INFORMATIVE BLOG OF ALL TIME IS FINALLY HERE!!

I have a new way to express the fact that something is good.

I am calling it..."all-caps".

If something is delicious, I will say "This pita wrap is all-caps yummy!" or "I saw Skillet live and they all-caps rocked it!"

My logic is this, when you want to express excitement about something in a text or post, you're more likely to make liberal use of the caps-lock button on your keypad.  So a baseball game can be thrilling or it can be THRILLING!

See the difference?

In regular speech, the only way to do this would be to yell, but that's not always the best thing to do.

So...

Just say "all-caps" before your description of how much you enjoyed, Guardians of the Galaxy.

"It was all-caps the best movie of the summer!"

This leads me to another topic I am wrestling with.  Superlatives.

I work in radio, but in essence I am a writer.  (See my previous blog)  Because I am a writer, there is an ongoing search for the right words to use in every break, weather report, traffic update and news cast.

I have noticed that my fall back words for certain topics tend to be "most amazing", "absolutely wonderful" and "really exciting".

I want to change this.

Here's the danger...the ever lurking superlative!

The definition of superlative is...the form of an adverb or adjective that expresses a degree of the adverb or adjective being used that is greater than any other possible degree of the given descriptor. English superlatives are typically formed with the suffix -est (e.g. healthiestweakest) or the word, most (most recentmost interesting). One prepositionnear, also has a superlative form, as in Find the restaurant nearest your house.

I found this definition through extensive skimming of Wikipedia.

Until I enter into the actual presence of our God, where words will never be enough, I don't think I could use the words "amazing" or "wonderful" about soup, cars or big events without feeling like I am over-hyping just for the sake of it.

So, it's game on!  Time for me to tighten up the language in order to be "most effective"!

How would you do it?

P.S.  Here is another challenge for you.  Help me replace another phrase.  "I want to encourage you to..."  This is a tough one for me!

Hey! Focus!

A blurry picture is useless.

An actual blurred image
There are faint outlines of something, but you are not really sure what you are seeing.  My wife and I walked out of a movie one time because the projectionist was more interested in other things than focusing the film on the screen!  Fuzzy images are hard to enjoy.

This is a lesson I am learning.

I have a lot going on in my head at any given time.  Thoughts, ideas, plans.  It's all raw data just bouncing around, and as a result there is no clear picture when it comes to communicating my ideas to others.

I blame the internet.

Because of the internet, I can indulge any line of thinking I want, whenever the moment strikes me.  If I am thinking about that old episode of "What's Happening?" from the 70's, and can't remember which one had the Doobie Brothers in it, chances are that someone has uploaded it to YouTube!

You see my dilemma?

I am a free stream of non-linear thought with no coherent purpose other than to explore!

The problem comes when I want to present an idea to someone else using "words".

Focus means that there are clear thoughts set forth in such a way as to convey a message to a willing listener.

I find this a challenge, because my thoughts seem disconnected and rambling, changing from second to second!

My wife will tell you, I am a horrible teacher!  I get frustrated easily if people don't "get it" like I do.  I struggle to express what I want others to know.

Is there hope for me?   Yes, I think so!

I believe I have found help for myself and others that share my ailment!

Writing!

Putting words to paper (or pixels) has helped me to organize what I want to say and refine it to be better than it would be if I tried to spit it out my mouth!

When I take a thought and commit it to the written format, it's an opportunity to step back and examine what I am saying with a unique perspective.

I can choose more effective words, delete-over used phrases and organize sentences so my points become clearer.
Wow!

Recently I have decided to re-consider what I would call my profession.  Instead of "radio guy", I would now call myself a "writer" if asked!

It's true!  We write bits, spots, blogs, shows, news, cut-ins, ads, liners and so on!  Of course we need to "perform" the things we write, but without good writing, the performance suffers.

Another added bonus that comes from writing is a renewed fountain of creativity.  It happens regularly with me that during the process of transcribing my musings, the brain is free to add to the original premise in fresh ways, and the results are really worth it!

If you want scripture to lean on for this it's in Habakkuk 2:2  Then the LORD said to me, "Write my answer plainly on tablets, so that a runner can carry the correct message to others." NLT

So, like, it's in the bible and stuff to.

Give it a shot.  Write me with your results!

Now THIS is a nice clear picture!

15th Anniversary!

Picture by Scott "The Shutterbug" Jackson!

I have been at LIFE 100.3 since April 7th of THIS year.

On August 15th of this year, they celebrated 15 years of being on the air in Central Ontario!

I felt a little weird being the new guy and helping them celebrate such a huge milestone, but it was a HUGE honor to be asked to host the big night!  Me and my co-host, Tim Maassarany were the MC's for the evening which included a look back at the launch day of LIFE in 1999, and a feature performance by former Newsboys front-man, Peter Furler!

The evening went very well and despite my nerves, people said we did great on stage!

Hats off to the organizers of the night, Pip Lucas and his team!  It was a sellout!  Around 600 excited people from around the province filled Highway Pentecostal Church in Barrie for a really fun night!

I feel so blessed every day to be part of this radio station!

Christian radio is a very interesting mix of ministry and entertainment and LIFE 100.3 knows how to blend the two perfectly!

I may not have been around for the first 15 years of LIFE 100.3, but I am overjoyed to be a part of the future!

Selfies and Dating Profiles...the Horror...the Horror!

Selfies.

I have taken my fair share...

No longer do you have to wait for an appointment with a photographer, or get someone else to take a picture of you, you can do it yourself!

When you share these photos with others, which is the whole point, they represent you in the truest sense!

YOU are the subject and YOU took the picture!

Selfies are popular, no doubt.

So why has New York State made them illegal?

Well, I should qualify. "Tiger selfies” are now illegal in New York State. Apparently it's popular for young men to pose with these big cats at travelling side shows and fairs, and then post them to their dating site profile!

So wrong!

It's dangerous for one, and if this is how you represent yourself to potential dating prospects, what is it saying?

"If you want someone with absolutely NO common sense, I'm for you!"

Since you can't take a selfie with a tiger any more in New York, what will be the next thing to pose with to attract a date?

" Here's me with a live grenade!"

While we are on the topic of the internet and silliness in general, I saw an online dating ad on TV for people 50 and up that said you have to be 18 or older to join.  Duh!

The thrust of the spot was that men and women that reach this age and find themselves single, do NOT want to go through the whole "getting to know you" phase and just want to find someone to sit around and watch TV with.

But that's only if they're being honest.

Speaking of honesty, how about this guys profile...

Not getting murdered would certainly be top of my list!  Without a doubt!

It makes me think though, is there a site that you can join where you CAN actually CHOOSE that perfect killer for you?

E-Disharmony?  LavaDeath? Un-Match?

I have been married for 27 years, so dating for me means something different.  We still do a "date night" but somehow the internet IS always involved!

That's my fault.

I just like to post Facebook updates every time we go out!  What ends up happening though is that "online" friends think we are out ALL the time!

Some examples...

Smokes Poutine.

Darien Lake, NY

Orillia.

Buffalo, NY.

Niagara Falls

See what I mean?  The "date" MUST be shared!

"Where do you want to go tonight, babe?"

"I don't care, as long as they have Wi-Fi!"

LOL

Now That I Can Breathe....

What a trip!

My wife and I were blessed to represent LIFE 100.3 at Kingdom Bound 2014 in Darien Lake, NY this year!

We had an absolute blast!  It's a huge event that spans 4 days.  It's all the concerts, rides and fellowship that you can handle all wrapped into one great event!

The event exceeded my expectations!  The people that put this on have a BIG task and they pulled it off in style!

The focus of the four days is all about Jesus from start to finish, and everyone connected to the event is really excited!

For me there were a few highlights.  I love hard hitting rock and roll, and I could not wait to see Skillet!

They did not disappoint!  Even my wife became a Skillet fan (or "pan-head") after their set!  Loved it!

I was also so encouraged to see hundreds go forward to receive Christ after Nick Vujicic spoke.

We got to explore the park of course...

The Ferris Wheel.  I am actually pretty nervous.

Random Shark!

Meeting LIFE listeners from Keswick!

I also got to meet the man who walked over Niagara Falls, Nik Wallenda!

He conquers fear by building up his faith!

The bands were ALL amazing performers!

Steven Curtis Chapman

Manic Drive

Capital Kings

Toby-Mac

Robin Mark!

We had such a great time!  The Kingdom Bound organizers have to be thanked for doing a stellar job!  This event has been going on since 1987, so I am sure they have learned a thing or two!  If you listened to my live cut-ins on LIFE during my time there, you could hear my enthusiasm!  If you have been thinking about a summer event to go to with your family, consider this one for sure!

Summer marches on with more events coming up...The LIFE 100.3 15th Anniversary Party, August 16th!
Karaoke Superstar, September 15th!

...and lots more!  Stay tuned!!
